Water And Skin Hydration

Water And Skin Hydration

Staying adequately hydrated maybe important for your skin and it’s definitely a good idea for your overall health.

Water is essential for maintaining life and cellular function in all organs. Dehydration can lead to extreme thirst, irritability, fatigue, and nausea. Extreme- dehydration may be life-threatening and damaging to organs.

I chose this topic because of the abundance of advice supporting good hydration for healthy skin.

Given the amount of advice out there, I was surprised to find little research available examining the relationship between daily fluid intake and skin hydration or appearance; the studies that do exist are inconclusive.

However, one study suggests if you are currently consuming less than 3.2L/day of TOTAL fluids (that’s from everything you drink and eat), increasing your fluid intake may positively influence the appearance of your skin. 1

In other words, if you’re not getting enough fluids your skin may be showing it, so drink up!

The skin has historically been used as a tool by physicians.

Pinching the skin and measuring how long it takes to return is an indicator of hydration, called the skin turgor test. Although, a study in children found the skin turgor test was only moderately reliable in predicting hydration status.

It would appear this is an area that still needs to be explored. Whether we can tell someone’s hydration status from their skin or not, staying hydrated is extremely important for a healthy life.

How much and often you should drink during the day, unfortunately, is not a simple question.

The amount of water our body needs is a continuously researched subject and varies from one person to the next. I have no idea where the common recommendation of eight 8oz glasses of water per day, or “8-8” rule, came from. It would appear no one else does either, because there is no scientific evidence available to support it!

The American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends total fluid intake, from food and beverages, of 3.7 L/day and 2.7 L/day for men and women, respectively.

Proper Hydration Is Easy to Achieve.

2. PAY ATTENTION FOR THIRST CUES.

This is a sign your body is becoming dehydrated. Sometimes, we can confuse thirst for hunger.

The next time you feel hungry and it’s not meal time, try drinking a hydrating beverage instead. Then wait 15 minutes before eating.

You may be surprised to find you are no longer hungry!

3. INVEST IN A REUSABLE WATER BOTTLE.

This is a great way to help out the environment, save money, and show a little personal style.

Take the time to choose a water bottle that speaks to you... this may sound silly but if you like it, you are more likely to use it!

Purchase a size of at least 750mL.Aim to drink 2-3 bottles of water or other calorie-free beverages each day.

Side Tip: During summer months, or days you are sweating, you may require more fluids. Fill up at home or take advantage of local drinking fountains to save money while out!

This includes fruit juices and sports drinks. While these do provide fluids for hydration, the added calories from sugar offer no nutrient value and should be avoided.

If you must drink sodas, try to choose diet beverages and limit to 12oz each day. Choose water and low calorie, caffeine-free beverages, such as seltzer, most-often.
